Beauty from within

Your skin: More than meets the eye

You might not realise it but your skin says a lot about who you are. It reflects the life you’ve led, your overall health and even the skincare routines you practise. As your body’s largest organ, it’s also one of the most important to look after.

The outermost layer – the epidermis - acts as a protective barrier from the external environment, guarding against infection, dehydration and the sun’s ageing UV light.

The deep layer – the dermis – makes up around 90% of skin thickness. This is where you find collagen, elastin proteins and moisture-retaining polysaccharides. These are the essential building blocks that give skin its strength, suppleness and hydration. It is here that the first signs of ageing begin, long before they are visible on the surface.

How skin ages

The skin’s appearance changes with age as the natural regenerative system starts to slow down.

Dryness, loss of radiance, fine lines and wrinkles are all visible symptoms of damage happening to the dermal support structure. Dermatologists believe that up to 90% of skin ageing is caused by external factors. Pollution, stress, smoking, alcohol and UV light are all skin aggressors which produce harmful free radicals that attack the skin in a process known as oxidation. Over time the dermal support structure starts to break down and skin loses density and becomes thinner, showing visible signs of ageing.

Our exclusive marine complex

The secret from the sea

Sourced from the deep waters of the ocean, our exclusive Marine Complex is rich in polysaccharides and proteins similar to those found naturally in the skin. In the 1980s, Scandinavian scientists investigating the regenerative capabilities of marine life saw the potential to try and replicate similar effects in human skin. There is a close affinity between our cells and those we find in the living creatures of the sea and the ocean has proven to be a rich resource for skincare research. Further exploration and studies on the theory led to the identification and development of our signature Marine Complex, the proprietary ingredient that remains at the heart of the IMEDEEN brand today.
